AIWCA Plays Inaugural Match

10th September 2023

Blick Oval

An U/16 Girls team representing AIWCA for the first time played a beneficial rep. trial match against the Canterbury-Wests U/14 Moore Shield Boys team at Blick Oval, Canterbury on Sunday, 10-Sept-23. It was terrific to get access to a turf pitch so early in the 2023-24 cricket season, however it was soft with some damp patches, after heavy rain on Friday.

The trial match got away on time at 10.00am and the Australia-India Women's Cricket Association Girls team batted first in challenging conditions, scoring a respectable 8/169 off 40 overs, highlighted by brilliant batting from Aanya (47*), Jaaniya (34*) and a useful 15* from Maitri. The sun was bright and dried out the pitch, making conditions much more batter friendly after lunch.

The Canterbury-Wests top-order batters played aggressively and took the score to 1/124 off 20 overs, helped by several dropped catches. After the drinks break, the AIWCA Girls fought back superbly to take 6 wickets in the next 10 overs, making the home team quite nervous.

In the end, Canterbury-Wests Boys rep. team reached 7/171 off 32 overs to win by 3 wickets. The best of the AIWCA bowlers were spinners, Maitri and Manat, who took 2 wickets each. All the other AIWCA players (Aarna, Jhansika, Aarika, Thaniska, Mayher, Vani & Yanee) contributed well on the day and enjoyed the opportunity to play in this special match.

The match was played in great spirits and was a valuable learning experience on turf for both teams. Special thanks to Hardy Shah for organising the match and the AIWCA shirts; to Ron Woods for ordering the Subway lunch; to Abhi Siingh for helping with the coaching of the Girls; and to Bruce Wood and Sue Gregory for volunteering their services as the official umpires.

Nearly all the AIWCA players who participated in this match will be going on the Coaches' Association / Northern District Cricket Club U/17 Girls cricket tour to India in April 2024, so it was great to see them in action on the field.
